Default Dealer was unable to program remote.

I just bought an 05 Dakota SLT and it did not come with a remote. I went to the dealer and paid them the 250 for a new one and for the programming. After an hour and 45 minutes they told me that they couldn't program the remote for some reason and I would have to bring it back so they could dig deeper into the problem. I don't want to take it back and pay another 500 bucks for them to play with it until it works. Has anyone ever had this issue before? I'd like to narrow down the issue before they charge me too much. They said it had a can b bus open circuit error but they couldn't pinpoint the issue. Please HELP!

You already paid them, why would you pay them more to try install and program what they didnt install and program the first time... I would be nice and just make them step up to the plate. You dont owe them anything, especially since they didnt do what you asked and paid for...

Anyways, I haven't heard of anyone having problems with their remotes

I didn't have a problem like that but i had the issue where the holder for the battery broke off and it wouldn't and i thought it was the battery and couldn't get it to reprogram and tried it this morning and it came back since it is now soldered together

If you have the remote with you (which I hope you do since you paid for it) they are really easy to program yourself. Its all in the manual. When you enter programming mode in your truck, I think you have to hold the buttons on the new remote and the dash dings when it programs. Its a hit or miss kind of thing, no error codes pop up when it doesnt work. And if it doesnt work, you try again.

I can't self program it because you need a master remote for that. I don't have a working remote at all. What is odd is that I have a standard key that works in the ignition. Shouldn't the remote be the only thing that will start the ignition. I thought they were supposed to have a microchip.

No chip in mine .... I got a copy of my key (which has the fob) right at the local hardware store.

My key is chipped. I got a key copied for emergency door access, but if used in the door it will set the alarm off, and if you start the truck with it security will kill it after 4 seconds.

And like Bolt said, make them do what they already charged you for. Maybe pulling the battery cable will help reset something and help with that open circuit error. Good luck.

Is there a way to bypass the chip? I'm wondering if it had a chip and it was bypassed that may be what is preventing the key from programming. I'll try pulling the battery before I take it back to the dealer.

do me a favor, check the history of the truck, it could have been stolen and they popped the ignition, programming is simple, if the dealer cant do it, then they shouldnt be in bussiness

Do you have the alarm system? Im thinking thats why my key doesnt have the chip, I have no factory alarm system. In all seriousness, I would almost consider trying to get your money back and return the remote. Go get a Viper/Python 2-way remote system. For under $500 you should be able to get a 2-way alarm, keyless entry, and remote start that should work across parking lots up to atleast a half mile. It will be a better quality system than mopar. Just a thought.
