Default 2007 40k miles Cam sensor replacement already?

During a road trip with mild temperatures and sunny skies, traveling with cruise control at highway speeds, check engine light comes on and engine loses massive power. It did not stall, it would accelerate up to 2500 rpms and go no further (even out of gear floored). I was able to "baby" it to my destination 20 miles later. The next day it did the same thing, even cold CEL P0340 & P0344. I gunked the engine thinking maybe dirt or something may have caused a bad connection. After hosing the engine down (cold), I regained all power back for the rest of the day and the CEL reset. Today, the problem came back. I find it hard to believe that a cam sensor would need to be replaced already! Only other thing I can think of is maybe a dead short in a wiring harness or maybe arching from a plug. Any suggestions?

Wow, that is odd. Especially for a Cam position sensor. Like Eric said any sensor can go bad. I would check your wiring with a multi-meter before replacing aything. A bad ground can make your PCM throw codes.
