Question New tires needed - looking for recommendations / warnings!

Hello Fellow Dak Owners:

I have a 2005 Dakota Quad Cab SLT (RWD) with stock wheels and tires (P245/70R16). I'm on a tight budget, actually like the stock wheels (never really cared much for the tires) but, now I need to replace them. The stock tires were OK and got me through 50K miles, however, I'd like the newer tires to look more like an actual truck tire. Mud Terrain would be overkill (its not 4WD as I mentioned) but, I feel my truck deserves some new ones with a little more bite and I'd like to get something that has a similar look (ATs fall into this category like the BFG AT TAs). However, every time I pull tires like those up on a web site like Sears (with either my truck or tire size selected) I receive an "incompatible" error. Calling Sears resulted in an "are you sure you don't want the LE" version (of the Firestone's I listed below). Lookking at them, they look nothing like the ATs...

I'd really like to get...

Firestone DESTINATION AT Tire - LT245/70R16 106S OWL

but these are LT not P...

I assume the P stands for passenger and LT is for light truck. Can I get them anyway or will they rub? Everywhere I go they're special order with a 15% restocking fee, so asking all you experts first before I waste time and money.

Or am I stuck with some standard road tire?

Thanks!

This is what I did on my old 2wd truck:
BITOG-1.jpg
33x12.50x15 BFG All-terrains on the rear, 31x10.50x15 Steel Radials on the front.
I thought it looked good, but different strokes for different folks. The idea was to get a good beefy tire on the rear, and do a smaller street tire on the front so it didnt look like you put different tires on their because you were cheap. I wanted that stance with big rear tires and a slightly smaller tire in front. If I were to do it again, I would do probably a 34x12.50 in the rear to make the difference in the tires more obvious. If its something you would like, the advantage is you can do two cheaper tires on the front, and spend a good amount of your money on the two rear tires you use for traction.

Thanks SlvrKota22 _ I will check them out!

Hey rengnath,

That's actually a pretty slick idea and it really doesn't look all that funky. Someone would really have to take a second look to notice what you did. I'll consider it, but likely will stick with getting 4 of the same. Nonetheless, I do like the idea you came up with _ innovative. Also _ envious of your wheels. Wish I had the dough to fork out to get those too. My Dak is dark Navy and the black wheels would look sick. Appreciate the prompt reply!

Hey SlvrKota22,

Perfect! Exactly what I am looking for. So, can you explain to me really quickly why I can replace my existing tires with these? I understand the wheel diameter is the same, but how in the heck did you figure out the range of width and aspect ratio one can work within? As you have guessed, I'm no expert in this kind of stuff...

Or just tell me to get lost and grab a ruler...

Your response also tells me the tires I have been looking at would work as well, but I could maybe grab some that are wider. However, I like the ones you have suggested better.

My dad got 45K on his Nitto AT there 35'' tires on 22'' rim on an H2....BFG AT go for 50k+

Thanks Mr Crash!

So, help me clarify some of the mystery around selecting a tire if you would. I have read you don't want to go past 10mm on width, whereas SlvrKota22 above has recommended ones that are. My alternate tire size is listed as P255/65R16 and that size doesn't have near the range of available models. Also, can I simply blow off the whole "LT" label as long as the dimensions of the tire are the same? I'm hung up, because each time I choose one of them, on Sears web site for example, I get an error stating "incompatible tire size". WTF? Almost all of the tires I like are prepay special order only through my local tire shops (Sears, Big-O). Where I live, these types of tires just simply aren't readily available...Thanks!

basically your typing on how i figured out... everyone on here who has got new tires basically went with a 265 75... the diameter is just over 31.5 and i knew that with my leveling kit i could fit 32 inch tall tires... so i knew the tires would fit my rims and not rub... heres a pretty pic of them

I like those tires! I'm 46k into the stocker SR-A's. I'll get something similar to those bad boys before winter.

Keep in mind, to fit 265/75/16's, you need to have a leveling kit installed or you will have some rubbing issues. Without a leveling kit, I would recommend not going bigger than a 265/70/16 tire, which was stock on some of our Dakotas.

LT or P tire doesn't matter as long as you're not towing anything on a regular basis.

The Firestone guy doesn't know ****, the Destination AT tire will look far better than the LE tire, they both will fit. And apparently the Sears website blows, 245 or 265/70/16 will fit. Check Discount Tire online for some good prices.
