Default DTE or How much gas do I really have left?

So, I know that when I get down to about 30 miles on my DTE, the little gas pump lite comes on and it goes 'DING', as in "You Ding-a-ling! Put some gas in me!"

But the question is, because I've never had to put more than about 18 gallons in my 22 gallon tank, what does the DTE read when it gets to '0'?

I was test driving a 2008 Ram 1500 on Sunday and the DTE was reading 'Low Fuel'. On her car, a Taurus, you can hit the reset button, and it will show the miles again. On the Dodge, no go.

No, my wife won't let me try this at home for some reason....

The questions we all come up with. We are an inquisitive race, aren't we?

DTE??? (distance to empty?, digital temperature enthalpy?) anyway, I "assume" you are referring to the overhead display? what test did you do to get it to read "low fuel"? and do you want it to read low fuel or miles to empty???

I drove mine until the fumes were gone to find out how much $$ would it take to fill her up. That was when i bought her. Me personaly, i would prefer it to read the miles. "low fuel" i don't need the over head computer to tell me something i already know, the stupid ding and the low fuel light are already driving me crazy at that time.

I'm guessing it has to go below '0'. It most likely means you still have about 3 gallons of gas left, for me that would be about 50 miles or so before I fall to the wayside thumbing a ride to the gas station.

Do I really want to find out? No. I'm more than happy to just put in 17-18 gallons of gas at a time.

The question came up because I had not seen it before because I hadn't seen it in my Dakota. First time I saw it was in the 2008 Ram 1500.
