Default Towing with cruise

Hi, I just got a 26' travel trailer 4200lbs dry and was wondering if it was OK to haul it in tow/haul using the cruise control( it seems to tow smoother). I have a 09 Dakota Crew Cab 4.7l Automatic. Over the winter gonna put on Mopar towing mirrors and a trans cooler.

There should be no issue with using cruise control while towing using the tow/haul function (aka turning off the overdrive so you do not trash it). I would suggest you look into some load levelers for the rear springs. The *** end will sag pretty bad with just a few thousand pounds on it.

Also make sure you have a really good ground wire from the trailer to your rig. I have heard some people had the cruise control kick off when they use the turn signal to change lanes. The ball is not a ground, run a wire.

i was under the impression that od still worked in the tow/haul mode, just the shift points are modified. when i use tow/haul, it still cruises in the same rpm, just takes longer to get there. I have heard you can have the pcm reflashed to turn the tow/haul button turned into an od on/off switch instead.

Yes I think you are right jkeaton it still goes into OD but it takes a lot longer to get there. I forgot to mention it has 3.92 rear end is this better for towing than 3.55?

To the best of my knowledge when you hit the tow/haul button it turns off the overdrive and changes the shift points.
But the computer will determine if it is safe to turn the overdrive back on.
To test this turn on the overdrive with out towing anything. You will notice that after a while the overdrive will kick back on by its self.

Now reading what I wrote it seams like we are talking about the same thing LOL.

yes, the 3.92's are much better for towing.

mine must be messed up. when i have tow/haul mode on, the rpm's are all over the place, like the trans is slipping.

mine does that but it seems like it never locks up, if i'm going up a hill and holding the same throttle position, the rpm's will start to go up, reminds me of a clutch slipping under load on a manual...
