Just to clarify.

So an "inside the box rail" soft tonneau cover will fit both gens?
or is it the inside of the box width that changes from the front to the back on the 2 gens?

the way i read it is the 2nd gen bed is square, the 3rd gen tapers, the front is 2" wider than the back. So theoretically, a bed cover from a 2nd gen would hang over 1" on each side at the tailgate on a 3rd gen.

The 3gen box body tappers towards the back on the outside top of the rails and fenders. the inside of the box is square.

I believe this is only an issue if you have a Hard Cover. and it site to the outside of the the rails at the front. if it's just barly on the top of the rail you won't have any issues.

You can see the rail get narrow at the back of the box.

And the Rail get wider towards the front. (not the best pic) but you can see it.

oh i get it, so a soft one that clamps to the underside of the inside lip should be ok, it will just show a little more of the top rail at the front than in the back, you can see that in your second pic. (which I think is the same as the truck in the sig???) What kind of cover is that? I'm wanting to buy one buthere are just so manu to choose from, I'm stuck...(velcro? snaps? etc)

That cover is the Extang Revolution. Uses rubber seals on the rails to keep the weather out. It does the job for me.

When I was looking many ppl told me to look at Extang, they are about the best on the market. I, myself, will also say this now after buying one
