Syn motor oil
I was wondering if anyone use syn motor oil in their truck.I have an 05,4x4 4.7 less than 90 thou km on it and I was thinking about syn oil as they say it runs cooler, easier on cold starts, lil more HP and milage and fewer oil changes.
Whats some off you opions.

I used to have a Jeep Comanche with the inline 6, had about 75k miles on it and decided to go synthetic. Worst choice I ever made, motor sounded like it had ball bearings rolling around inside it there was so much valvetrain noise. I would love to go synthetic with the Dakota but am afraid, since it has had conventional all it's life that I would have the same thing happen.
I am about to do my second oil change since having my 05 Dakota, 83kish on it.
First thing I did was to drain it out and put synthetic in it. I also went to a bigger filter (PH8A) that is better than double the dixie cup size filter that comes on it stock.
I use Mobil 1 oil and got a great deal on a case of Mobil 1 filters. I think synthetic will do a good job of gently cleaning any dino oil build up while not breaking down like dino oil.
I have not noticed it being any noiser.

I just switched mine at 62,000 I used the Valvoline synthetic. I haven't had any issues with it. I get a great deal on everything working at NAPA right now so it wasn't a hard decision to switch over. I just picked up front and rear diff gaskets and 3 quarts of syn geal oil for the rear for 50 bucks. Didn't have enough to buy front oil but that will be Wed. and I will be doing that later that night.
I've used Synthetic 5w-20 since new. I recently been using royal purple and have noticed more power and better mileage with this. I have been going 8k on the royal purple, and it more than likely could go more. This stuff does not break down like the Mobil 1 and is as clean as it goes in, when in comes out.
I used it in my 02 caravan since 51000 km no problems and now have 111000 km on it. helped my economy and you can go longer on oil changes, loved it. have not done it on my Dakota yet but its only had 2 oil changes. might just go with truck suv oil.
I used Valvoline synthetic in an S10 I had and a friend i have used it in a Ram he had. The Valvoline synthetic oil broke down and we both had to keep putting oil in the trucks between oil changes. I switched to Castrol synthetic and he switched to royal purple and nether one of us had problems after that. I have been putting in Castrol in my Dakota now with no problems.

I just run conventional, not even synthetic blend anymore. I did go Valvoline Synpower after I got the truck at 86k, and it started leaking from the crankshaft seal. I noticed no difference, so I changed the oil and got the seal fixed and I have stuck with Castrol High Mileage since then. I did do an oil change with Valvoline High Mileage Synthetic blend once and it made the truck noisy. The Castrol seems to get rid of my valvetrain noise better, and from what I have read on BITOG.com, changing your conv oil every 3k miles keeps your engine protected just as well as a long change interval on a synthetic. Its good reading there, and from what I gather, sythetic oil is unnecessary for the average driver unless you want to go for extended drain periods, high performance or if youre running in very cold conditions. 5w30 works fine for me in WI where it drops below 0 during the winter. Just make sure that if you do synthetic with extended drain intervals that you change your filter every 3-5k.
