First, car dealers have to pay taxes on their on hand inventory, so you can usually get a better deal at the end of the month or the end of a year as thats one less tax payment for them.
Also, if your not buying new, the "dealer only" auction is a great resource. The trick to getting in, is making friends with a local dealer and finding out where the nearest auction is. I know some dealers will give you a buy rate (usually 500-1000) over cost of the vehicle. 99% of the time its still alot cheaper then what you can buy it for off the lot. Also, if there's something specific you want, you can have them search the auctions. they're more apt to buy exactly what you want if they know what you want and what you'll pay. its a win win as they don't have to keep it on the lot etc etc. Just make sure your up front about cash on hand and that you would be financing the rest.
p.s.
Don't forget to hold back $1000 of that cash so you can do all the instant mods/parts you want without having to wait
yeah thats very true UELAND was just gonna suggest the dealer auction you beat me to it! but yeah man do some shopping and go in there and if you see the truck you want...even if you have the money...like say its 13500 say you'll only pay 10K for the truck...and then watch the magic happen! they'll come back with like 12500 and tell them NO its only worth 10K to me. and then when your like thanks but no thanks i'll go to the other dodge dealer that has a similar dodge with less miles i can get for 10 watch how quick they will be like okay okay we'll give it to you for 10! just gotta walk in there and be like i run this place and i'm getting what i want for the price i want it at!
I was going to suggest carmax, you can search for Dakota's from all over the country and they will ship to the store closest to you (for a fee sometimes, depending on how far they have to ship it). That's where I got mine, I'm in Winston-Salem and my truck was in South Carolina, they shipped it here for me free cause it was within my zone. Just a thought. I've had real good luck with carmax, they treated me right and took care of a few problems after I bought it. The Dak is the 3rd vehicle I have purchased from them. Just my personal experience, not trying to advertise.

My sister bought a car from them, and they have a dak that i am interested in, but the dealer i bought my old truck from has one of their loaners that they will sell me for about 17000. I aint seen it yet, but i was told that it was the same thing as what i had, but with a V8 and silver, and maybe a few extra options, hopefully tow package. Im guessin that its a oem dodge dealer, their loaners are gonna be well maintained?
Id buy a ram, but i test drove one with a 4.7, and i actually saw the gas gauge move on the test drive, not good for me. Maybe if i try one with the Hemi, it could be better, but i was not too happy seein that.
Kinda want a full size, for hauling things, but i can get a trailer to fix that.
A friend at work has a Ram with the 4.7L and he said that when he is WOT he can see the gas gauge move
