wth 4x4
alright guys this has me troubling and my father. today i left class to head home thx god i live not even a mile from my college. well it started to snow lightly. but when i left the roads were covered enough that u might need 4x4. well i used 2wd until i got on my streets because they dont plow them plus i passes my friends street when i slid. put it in 4 wheel and i then proceeded to back up and the turn down her street. but when i was going down her street the truck seemed to be jerking. when i left i went to my other friends house to help them move his 2wd car. well that was just just a nice push with me and his little brother. when i was heading over i put the window down and head a howling noise... thinking the bearings maybe? but wouldnt they make the sound without 4x4 engaged? well i would turn the **** to take it out of 4 wheel... and then engaged it again. well it took awhile to take out and put back in was no problem. then the noise went away. i put it back in and it comes. i did this couple times. and couple times had to touch the brakes and give gas to take it out of 4 wheel. what the hell is going here? is the oil bad? or both hubs going? it worked perfect last year during the storm. i havent seen the boots leak or anything. i always check them just incase. had my friend get down there and he cant see any problems.

I doubt the issue is with the hubs. Our front drive train always spins, even when the 4-wheel is not engaged. Only possible problem would be something in the transfer case.
When was the last time you had the transfer case fluid changed? A regular transmission fluid change does not change out the transfer case fluid.

I paid $60 to get my fluid changed.
I can hear when my truck is in 4x4, but its not noticable to anyone who wouldnt drive the truck on a daily basis. The front end makes a little more noise than when its in 2wd.
Sometimes I have problems with when I engage, the truck will jump forward or when taking it out I need to put it in nuetral while rolling slowly. I figure it just because the truck has 110k on it and its a shift on the fly. I would rather have a manual shifter just because it would mean less parts to fail. But I realized never put it in 4x4 while taking off; I ended up grinding the hell out of the gears doing this while on the throttle. I always do it while at a stop or slow roll now.

Ok, so I have heard two things (regarding our 4wd automatic Dakotas):
1. If you have your trans FLUSHED, the transfer case fluid will also be flushed. If you just dump the pan, you will still have old fluid in the transfer case.
2. The transmission is separate from the transfer case. This has to be changed by itself, flushing the trans has no effect on the transfer case.
Which one is right? #1 or #2? Can't wait to hear the responses
