Default clunking noise?

hey guys, i have an 05 dakota that is making a clunking noise when in reverse with the wheels cut. it is also causing the wheel to jerk. keep in mind that this occurs while in 2wd. could this be a transfer case problem or a cv joint problem? if so how can i check to see if the cv joint is bad? thanks

Sounds almost like a CV joint, but then again, I have seen sway bars do that too... it doesnt do it in drive? Its the ground level where you are doing it or are you going over bumps?

Are you possibly up against unlubricated stops? Up against steering knuckle.

Thats a good possiblity... great thought. The steering stops can clunk if you are fully turned and the suspension is articulating...

i does it in drive, but not as bad. it does it on flat ground, no bumps. i tried to check for play in the cv joint but i dont notice any unusual movement. do i need to loosen the nut on the hub to check it? it started to do it when i put it in 4wd in reverse with the wheels cut, it made a bang and has done this ever since.

I bet this is an '05. Mine does this once in a blue moon. I've learned to live with it.
