Default My solution to code P0499 '06 Dakota V6

I searched for solutions, but didn't have much luck. I did find the problem. The leak detection pump had corroded really bad destroying the terminals and coil.

The big problem is that the vapor canister which the leak detect pump is in is located on top of the fuel tank. To get to it, you have to remove the bed or lower the fuel tank. I chose to remove the bed.

At this point I was still unsure what the problem was, but was fairly sure it had to do with pump. I could occasionally hear a noise coming from the pump location while driving. When I removed the pump, there was some powdery stuff in it, so I decided to disassemble it, and that is when I found the inside of the pump to be corroded and falling apart.

I had to go to the only Dodge parts store open on a Saturday on Oahu to find the part, and it cost me $75. Could have bought it online for $25, but I needed it now.

Check engine light is now out after erasing the code. I hope this helps others!

Hope this helps someone!!!

Thanks! I plan to be on here a bit now that I found it. My truck is nothing special, just a 2006 Dodge Dakota SLT club cab. I actually found the site searching for ways to fix my problem. Many others had the same fault code, but no solution so I figured I would add what I found. I love the forum so far!

that sucks that your fuel pump went junk already man. that shouldnt happen to an 06. i would say you may have gotten some bad gas a couple of times or you drive around with the tank low on fuel often so the fuel pump isnt lubricated by the gasoline. just a suggestion, not juding you

Wasn't the fuel pump. It was the leak detection pump for the emissions system. The inside of the pump terminals and coil had real bad corrosion causing it to fail.
