so you think holding it at 4500k at 106mph going up a massive hill did it? hehe

well i figured since the motor sounded fine after our timing chain mishap i could play just once.

With the oil filler cap spraying oil, your engine low on oil and erratic oil pressure... that is probably what killed your driver's side head.

I researched the timing chain jump and it appears that is common on high mileage motors. It's even recommend to replace it on high mileage engines as it can stretch out of spec. But once pressure is taken off the chain tensioner it can jump. The important thing is we successfully set timing. When you started the motor, it idled smooth, didn't throw any codes and there wasn't any knock I was relieved. I said to myself, 14 hours just paid off.

To think, I was worried about you checking the timing chain when you got back to Kansas. Not realizing you didn't torque the oil filler cap and then went on a WOT throttle run while spraying oil. Well, now we know what killed your motor. If you hadn't made that WOT run low on oil your truck would still be running and you wouldn't be looking for a new motor.

Why would you change the motor, instead of just investigating and replacing the drivers side head gasket?

If you have the money and just want the new motor I say go for it. But seams like it would be cheaper to just change the drivers side head gasket.

You are right man. If the head isn't warped the best bet would be to change the gasket on the driver's side and probably change out the entire timing chain set also.

As much oil is leaking from that head I bet is warped somewhere. That only cost $75 for a machine shop to resurface.

Winston, with what I know now I'm saying you might want to consider a complete rebuild or buy the new motor. I don't know how much damage you did running it WOT without oil in it. That is the #1 way to destroy an engine. Yesterday when we spoke you said it had a big loss of power, sluggish acceleration, hesitation, rough idle etc. That suggest more than just a blown headgasket. There is no telling how much damage was done to the motor without taking it apart.

That is what happens when you run a motor WOT without oil in it and erratic oil pressure.

Look at it this way, even though you forgot the oil filler cap if you hadn't driven it hard this wouldn't have happened. Even you said it all fell apart after your WOT run. If you hadn't driven it hard and found the oil filler cap loose, no big deal. You could have tightened up the bolts topped off the oil and drove away.

True statement man. Next time you do a major repair just baby it around until you are positive it's good to go. When I tore my engine apart I drove it without the supercharger and babied it around constantly checking the fluid levels. After about a week I was confident enough to put the blower back on and do some light data logging.

I bet next time I say "Winston, don't drive it hard until you can get it in for a diagnostics check" you listen, lol.
