Default How to tips for refurbing headlights?

Hey guys,

I got my second Nightrunner in the mail today, and unfortunatly it didnt look as good as the first did ..... and ofcourse it was the one I spent more on. So; time to fix it because I want OEM Nightrunners.

Here are some pics of what I have.

The first one (dont mind the "jigglin jugs in the second pic):

And the one that needs some work:

The camera makes it looks worse than it is, but you can see it still. The headlight looks good from 5 feet away. It is just some wear on the very surface of the headlight, and its only on that top surface; not across the whole face.

Now for the professionals out there; how do I fix this? And ofcourse, money is no object when it comes to my truck, so if it needs to be professionally reworked just say so. And what ever I do, I would like to do it to both so they match eachother.

Well I have done many resurface jobs on headlights with a simple restoration kit from Wal-Mart for like $30 bucks. It takes maybe an hour or so to do both but you can always start there. Of course if you really like doing things yourself and showing your truck some love that is the first thing I would do. If not, then take it to a pro, you will most likely end up with a more even job and it will probably make it look nicer too.

Will the $30 kit be able to take care of this, or is there a chance that it wont?

How much would be fair for a refurb by a professional? I spent $180 on both lights shipped, and I dont really want to spend another $100 because I couldve just bought brand new Nightrunners for $300

Its just irritating because the light was advertised as "excellent condition" and Im sure the seller would refund the money for it, but then I need to try and find another headlight.

Its actually pretty easy, get some 600, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit wet sand paper. Start with the 600 until you have removed all the scratches. Then go over with 1000, 1500, and 2000. When done go to the bathroom and grab some tooth paste and a moist rag.. its like buffing out scratched on a car. Pretty simple.

You can use a buffing wheel, or and scratch remover, but tooth paste works just fine.

500 - 800 - 1200 - 1500 - 2000 wet sand. After the surface is scratch free follow with polish and wax. Takes some time and elbow grease but they will look like new. There are some how to videos on youtube.

Funny in the amount of time it took me to write this someone else did also

I had scratches on the top of mine that looked just like that. I just wet sanded them and buffed it out. Looks brand new.. even in every angle of the sun.

Looks like I will go pick up some sandpaper tomorrow then. I dont mind putting some time to bring the headlight back to life. If I wanted to polish the other one to perfection, should I just start out with a finer sandpaper like 1000 grit since there are very minor imperfections on the lens?

And to keep the surfaces even, do I want to sand the whole headlight or just the spots in need of it?
