I had an 01 Clubcab 4x2 Dakota with the 4.7L V8. I had a fiberglass tonneau cover and the Dakota was sitting at factory ride height. The truck got around 330 miles to a full tank. I got roughly 16-19 mpg on it depending on how I drove it. I consistently used cruise when on the highway, which lowers my RPM's while driving. I use cruise even on the streets around here, as there are several where there is a mile in between lights.
I sincerely doubt many of you are getting more then 18-19 mpg at best in this truck. The fuel economy just isnt there. However, on road trips or tons of highway miles then yes I could see you getting around 20-22 unloaded.
You may be getting better gas mileage with the 04-05 models, but not with anything previous.
And for the idiot who said he's getting 24-28mpg in a 4.7L Dakota....share whatever it is you are smoking because you are not going to get that in a Dakota. Maybe a V6, but no way in a V8. Not unless you are driving an 06 with MDS, which I dont think the Dakotas have....
