Default How to remove front wheels??

'05 Dakota 4x4 Quad Cab...

Removed the lug nuts and wheel won't come off. Removed the center cover and see there is a nut on a threaded rod...would have thought this is the wheel bearing but wonder if it is involved with the 4 wheel drive and it too needs to be removed before wheel comes off.

Can anyone confirm and if yes what size socket will I need and torque spec when reinstalling it??

Thanks...

Bob (4WD ignorant!!)

Rims get bonded to hubs by rust. When you get the rim off, knock the rust off with sandpaper or wire brush and put a light coat of anti-seize on the contact points. That will make next time easy. I would wrestle with all 4 and get them done. If you ever have to change a tire in the rain and can't get the flat one off the hub, you'll be triple p*ssed.

To remove your wheels use a BFH and smack the tire as hard as you can it wont hurt anything.

I carry around a two pound rubber mallet in the truck. Hit the tire (front side) once or twice and the wheel pops right off. I just tried some lube between the wheel & hub, so when the 20's come off in the fall, we'll see how well that works. Plus, the mallet may come in handy for an 'attitude adjustment'.

To take the rotor off you will need to take the calipers off then hit the rotor with a rubber mallet. If you hit the rotor in the same spot every time the rotor will Not come off, you need to hit it in different spots.

I use antiseize on the back of my rims and the lug nut threads. Re-apply at every rotation.
