Default tire size

I have a 2008 Dodge Dakota 2WD, V8, SLT, quad cab, and was wanting to make it look and handle more street like. What is the widest tire I can fit on my truck with my stock 16" rims. I noticed BF Goodrich makes a 285/60/16 tire that I think would look and perform great, but I don't know if it might be too wide. I would prefer the tire not stick out the wheel wells, but if it sticks out less than an inch that is OK.

My stock tires are 245/70/16, and I know I can go to at least 265/70/16, but I would like to have a more low profile tire than the 265/70/16.

Thanks.

I have 275/65/18s and they rub a little on the frame at full turn I know you can put spacers on and get wider tires someone on here did that and they are running 285s

I'm trying to remember who it is, but they are running 305s on a 20" wheel. The Dak is black.

I think the guy with 305/50/20's is Amanka, and he moved his front bumper forward to fit them on. They are on Ram flower petal wheels. With my 285's, I had to trim up front a little, and that is with a leveling kit.

I think with a leveling kit, you could fit a 275/70/16 tire with a little trimming.

Thanks for the information everybody.

I don't want to use any leveling kits, do any trimming, or use spacers. If anything I will just go with some 265/70/16 or 255/65/16.

Do you think I could try measuring with the wheels turned all the way in one direction and see how much clearance I have? A 285/60/16 tire is only 1.57" wider than my 245/70/16 tires. This means I should only have acount for .785" of clearance from the inside of the tire.

Does this make sense?

I think you can put on the 285/60/16 tires without any problem, but it's an odd size and your choices will be very limited. You better have at least an 8" wide rim to mount them on, not sure if you can get them on a 7" wide rim. Hopefully you can test fit them at a tire shop.

My stock rims should be 8" wide.

The reason I went with a 285/60/16 tire is because its about the only tire size I could find that is wider, with a moderate low profile, and is 16". Most other tires either have too low of a profile, and too narrow, or are only offered in bigger diameters. The 285/60/16 tire is made by BFGoodrich. Its a Radial T/A.

If you know of any other 16" tires that meet my qualifications please let me know.

The only other tires I saw were Goodyear Eagle GT II.

I forgot about the Goodyear Eagles. I do remember seeing these in a 285. I am not much of a Goodyear fan, although the stock Goodyear SR-As, that I have on my truck now, seem to be doing well. They are not showing much tread wear and I have put just over 32K miles on them. They are not the smoothest tires, or the best looking though.

As for Maxxis tires, I have not heard much about this brand. I am not sure how good of tire Maxxis is. I will keep these in mind.

Thanks for the suggestions.
