Default 2005 Dakota transmission

I bought this a few months ago when it was cold out and didn't think the problem was serious, then the weather got better.
I have a 2005 SLT 4.7 Magnum and what appears to be a 3 speed w/hauling gear transmission that when first started winds up like a diesel before shifting into 2nd and over revs for the first minute or two of driving. Then it shifts normally until I shut it down for a while and it starts all over.
Then, the new problem. I drove the truck yesterday for about 35 or 40 miles in 80 degree weather for the first time and noticed a burning smell, the tranny was shifting differently and when I let off the accelerator I appeared to slow down a lot faster--like the tranny was dragging the speed down. A look under the hood showed nothing obvious and my fluid level was in the normal range and the color was still good. I never found out what caused the burning smell.
I really like this truck but it is my first Dodge in a while so I'm not familiar with the shifting patterns but this seems to be out of the ordinary. With these few clues does anyone recognize this kind of problem they might have had? Thank you.

i'd wait for someone with an auto to chime in here but it could be over due for a filter change. ive read a ton of threads about shifting problems cause by clogged filters. may be worth looking into. also is it throwing any check engine lights or anything.

Start with the filters. I'm not sure but you may be able to get the bands adjusted.

Ditto. Start with a filter change. There are 2 of them.

yes, have the fluid replaced but make sure you use Mopar ATF+4 or else you will destroy the transmission. You might also visit your dealer and have the PCM reflashed. Almost every week there's a new software update for these transmissions.

Since 2004, All Dakota have gone away for the old Torqueflite transmissions that have adjustable bands. They now use the 42RLE used on V6s or 545RFE used on V8 auto transmissions which are bandless transmissions (they're based on the front wheel drive A604 transmission found on minivans).
