Default Cv shaft help

Hey guys my step moms 2004 dodge dakota 4.7 4x4 is making a noise coming from the front cv shaft, especialy in 4x4, so i suspected a bad cv joint. She took it to the shop and they said cv joint is bad but you cant just replace the joint, you have to replace the hole shaft which is 400. Also there telling her that its a dealer only part but told her to look for a front driveshaft. I dont think they know what there talking about, or just trying to scam her. If the cv joint is bad cant i just replace the joint? And what does the front driveshaft have to do the a bad cv joint? I found a cv shaft on advance auto wedsite is like 80 bucks. Unless im missing something i think they want her to pay 400 for a front driveshaft that she doesent need so they can make some money off of her. Any help would be apritiated, thanks guys

lol your getting scammed. ebay sells them for 250 bucks with double ujoints not that cv crap. the cv joint is on the tcase side of the half shaft. the rubber boot gets sheared off and dirt and grime gets in there and ruins the joint. same thing happened to me and i just ripped the half shaft out of there so now im 2wd.

can can rebuild the cv but its just not worth it. just replace the whole half shaft.

Are the 04's the same as the 05's? If so, you are getting scammed....took me maybe 2 hours and @$ 100 and I've never fine one before. Hardest part was getting the hub off.
