Strange whoosh sound in engine at start up, and then...
I had a whooshing sound on my new 2011 Dak that was driving me crazy and gas mileage that was awful. At first I thought it was the transmission slipping and took it several times to the dealer but of course the diagnosis was "no codes, unable to duplicate". Never happened at the dealership and they thought I was crazy. They finally said the noise had to be the fan clutch locking up but that was the nature of the beast.
I insisted on the clutch being replaced which they finally did. Have not had the noise once in the two months since the replacement and my mileage improved by almost 2 mpg. Apparantly in addition to almost every time I started from a stop, everytime I got to highway speed, the clutch was locking and killing the mileage. Sorry, no suggestions on the stall but mayby it was just one of those glitches that happens once in a while for no apparant reason.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I like that there's some agreement that it could be the fan clutch. That helps a lot. I feel like I can trust this place for some good answers on Daks. I'm really confused by the stall though. I'm curious if it's related to driving with the truck making the sound, whatever it could be.
It does it kind of on-and-off, sort of random depending on how often I go to use it. But since it seems to replicate, I think what I'll do is get a video on my phone and put it on the Tube so you can see what happens.
When it did it today, I thought about just sitting at normal idle to wait for it to go away but impatience got a hold of me and I revved to 2000 and it went away slowly. I can barely hear the engine over this noise when it's doing it and when it's gone I can hear the engine again.
I usually keep my gas tank at half full (I can't afford to keep it much higher than that) and I appear to be getting like 13 or 14 mpg city which is where most of my driving occurs. That's just an estimate.
I don't have a Cold Air Intake but I am interested in getting one if it improves the gas mileage as much as people say. I wouldn't mind that little bit of noise.

Greetings Ya'll,
My Van is a 2000 "2500 Ram" - 318 CID EFI- miles are 140,389, & I bought it used from another Contractor.
All of my problems, with the exception of a "slight miss" came about after installing new plugs, wires, cap, & rotor button, which were long overdue.
Then my Van began acting as if it were "POSSESSED", & in need of an Exorcism.
Within seconds, from a Cold Start the IAC Port would emit an Extremely loud "Whooshing noise", which would greatly ease up, by tapping the accelerator, or increasing the engine speed, as if driving at highway speed.
At low range speeds of 25MPH to 40MPH, the motor hesitates, bogs down, & at times even backfires
I have found my "whooshing Noise" to be coming from the port of the Idle Air Control, & it has occurred mainly at a Cold Start.
I sprayed out the Throttle body, & ports without dismounting anything, & at first many of my problems disappeared when I would start the motor, & then after all of the Dash lights disappeared, drive approximately 7 miles, & turn the motor off for about fifteen minutes. When I'd start the beast back up, & begin driving, I could tell that the "Whooshing noise" was absolutely consistent with low range driving, for I had the cowl off, & that when this noise was going on, I had a loss of power, as well as hesitation that could only be overcome by "tapping the accelerator".
When I got past the 45MPH speed limit & punched it, .... then the motor gained power, lost the noise, & didn't hesitate.
With all of these troubles, I also found that I have to replace my battery, cuz' it holds a charge only for about 48 hours, if the Van isn't driven, which I've been told that there is some kind of "Sensor" that monitors voltage to the battery that possibly could effect my Emissions Controls.
As far as this "Whooshing noise" is concerned, ... I've noticed that if I partially place my finger over the IAC port, while in park, that the idle appears to even out, & that if I fully block off the port, then the Van will stall.
Since this has all been going on, I've run Service Calls by using my wife's car, which so far, has worked out, but, in all Truth, .... She's not Happy.
I have to add, that I'm trying to fix these problems cuz' I've got a "very bad taste in my mouth", after paying a shop almost $900.00 to fix other issues (Brakes, wheel bearings, Alignment) on my Van, that turned out to not be fully fixed. When I took the Van back to them, they acted as if they didn't know me & said that they wouldn't be able to check out the problems for several weeks( they weren't busy), & that they would charge me.I had to get out of there, otherwise I'd gone to jail.
I guess what I'm asking is, ..... Could this Extremely Loud "Whooshing noise", be caused by a bad IAC, or improper voltage to the IAC?
