Default Strange whoosh sound in engine at start up, and then...

Hey everyone, first post here and it kinda sucks that it's not an introduction but I'll have to get to it and picture-posting later.

The title just explains the start of the issue but I'm betting you'll need some of this pertinent information:
2005 Dodge Dakota SLT 4.7L V8 4X4. I bought it used about a month and a half ago. It currently has a bit over 67,000 mi.

Story time. This evening, I was at a housewarming party for a friend and I brought some DJ equipment. After the party I went to go start my truck. It was idling at what seemed to be normal speed on the tach but I heard this really fast whooshing sound from the engine. I have no idea what it is. It's not the first time I've done it. I went to put it in drive. Didn't want to seem to move much. I put it in park, then drive again and it seemed to move but it was still wooshing. I pull into the driveway at about 5mph and near the end of the stretch I brake and seem to lose power to the engine. The brake pedal went hard and the car stopped and I turned the key and the engine started again. "Strange, I thought." So, it started again, still making this whoosh sound and I opened the engine compartment and it was dark so I couldn't actually see anything, but it was pretty damn loud. It kind of sounded like wind. I closed the hood figuring it was a waste of time at the moment to look since I couldn't see and went to rev the engine slowly to see what happens. I put it up to 2000RPM and the sound gradually faded out after about 3 seconds and it sounded like a normal engine again.

I've noticed it doing this whoosh before and am concerned with it stalling like this that it is related.

My first thoughts were it could either be...
  • Fan
  • Transmission

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I bought this thing to replace a Ford Ranger that liked to overheat and I hope I didn't get something that's just going to give me more problems. (It squeaks when I turn the steering wheel and also in the suspension, but I figure that's just regular maintenance I need to do.)

Sounds like the fan. Or, do you have a cai on it?

Could be the clutch fan coil is stuck and the fan is constantly spinning. Could be the throttle body hoses can loose.

The squeaking is either the ball joints of tie rod ends.

@jkeaton: I'm not sure what you mean by a "cai." All I can say is the truck is completely stock if you're referring to something aftermarket.
@Eimer123: That's what I figured about the squeaking. (I've been lurking a bit before I just joined to ask this. )

Cleaned your TB lately? The IAC valves can make a loud noise if their stuck. You could try removing the air filter assemb. and listen as someone started it up.

At the risk of sounding like a noob (I don't work on my own truck ) is there a glossary of acronyms I should know? I don't know what TB or IAC valves are.

I get that too. I even got it in my Durango years ago. "Whooshing" is really the engine turning fast but the truck is not moving as fast as you expect. It is like a slipping clutch. I ignore it and it goes away. I don't know what causes it.

I should probably clarify that when I said I "lost power to the engine" that it actually stalled which made it able to turn the key and start it again. Sorry about the weird phrasing.

No worries, cai is a cold air intake, a lot of guys add that first. Instant horsepower gain and an awesome wooshing sound (thats why I asked), kind of like an old 4 barrel carb at wot...but also just basic hissing and sucking air sounds because you basically open the intake up. TB is throttle body, thats the thing that the air intake plenum is connected to right on top of the engine. It contains the throttle and the IAC (idle air control) which controls the engine idle speed. The clutch fans on these trucks makes a helluva racket when it engages, mine will do it on start up sometimes for no apparent reason, then mostly when the temp needle goes above halfway. Keep describing symptoms, we will get it narrowed down.
