Default tranny question

I have a 2008 with the v8 and a auto tranny.. at around 45mph sometimes it feels like it is shifting in and out of gear. My trannsmission guy said this was normal as this is the speed Dodge set the transmission to lock up. He told me to keep the OD off if i am just driving around town. Does anyone else have this?

How many miles on it?

Have you ever had the filters & fluid changed?

If yes, were the new filters OEM?

Sounds like the the lock-up torque converter doing its thing.

V6 here with 4-speed auto and 3.55 gears, but it sounds like your trans works similarly. If I accelerate slowly from a stop with light throttle, it'll go through all four gears, then lock up the torque converter at around 39mph and 1200rpm ("locking up" the engine output with torque converter output like it was a standard clutch). If I continue to try to accelerate at the same rate with light throttle, it'll unlock the torque converter at around 44 (can feel like a downshift) to get engine rpms up into a range more suitable for accelerating. Finally, it locks back in at about 49mph, and stays locked since rpms (and torque) are now high enough with it locked to continue to accelerate.

Now this only applies if I granny it from a stop with very light throttle. Anything more, it stays out of lockup until I'm at cruise speed, since the system "sees" I need good acceleration the whole time.

Phew! I am relieved to find this thread about shifting, instead of "Lola", if you know what I mean

Anyhow, most of us HATE the stock shift program...which is why we have the Superchips trans package

Yes I have experienced this weird action you speak of. Its not too annoying and happens very rarely. I notice it under load at around the speeds you suggested. Its just normal sloppy automatic operation. I am SC tuned and I can still get the truck to do it, but its not as common. I wouldn't worry to much unless its worsening or making odd shifts or something of that nature...
