What happens when the key loses its program? Can't start the engine?

As Eimer123 said, his remotes don't work anymore due to dead batteries, so the truck will start anyway.

From the owners manual:

If your Remote Lock Control fails to operate from a
normal distance, check for these two conditions.

1. Weak batteries in transmitter. The expected life of
batteries is five years.
2. Closeness to a radio transmitter such as a radio station
tower, airport transmitter, military base, and some mobile
or CB radios.

I have seen this trick elsewhere on the net, try putting the key/fob up against your chin and test it out. Its supposed to extend the range using your body.

Seriously, I tried it out one time and did get some extra range out of it. But you may look slightly strange doing it though.
