Default lights dimming

i got a 10" MTX sub installed for my 2010 dakota with a 820 watt amp, it has a 400 amp cap as well but everytime the sub hits the headlights dim in and out. the dealership doesnt know if i would need a bigger battery or alternator so if anyone would know please let me know. other than that the system sounds amazing. thanks

alternator would help a little bit but good luck finding one. you best bet would be get one for a 4.7 durango its like 20 or so more amps. have you done the big three wiring upgrade yet? (i have a 900w {rms} kenwood mono block and an r12 so I know where your coming from.)

Larger grounds cables like 4 gauge from battery to body, body to frame. alternator ground to battery. think about it. if ur using 4 ga. for your amp power cable (or larger) your really not accomplishing much because the factory uses those cheap small ground cables for everything. plus the factory ground usually have a low strand count. high strand count is what you want.

sorry i havent replied in a while, i was on leave. but when i was home i went to a local audio store and they told me bout the "big three" upgrade so im goin to do that. they also said to take the cap out and put one of those small batteries cause the cap just takes and takes from the battery while a small audio battery will supply everything and just charge from the alternator. if that makes any sense to yall let me know, if not then i will try to explain it a little better lol

Wow that was the first reply I've ever read where the audio shop actually said to do something correct and not something that wouldn't do jack. Props to your local shop lol.

Been said before but, big 3. Ditch the cap. Also make sure your ground is good.

so now the trend is no caps and use a battery instead? How does that work?

I know you probably know your way around a lot of things but you can use a cap as long as you have a proper charging system to keep up with the demand for it.
