The Dakota was pulled because it was in direct competition with the Rams.
I agree with this, couple with the fact that it was never marketed well. The two trucks were just to close together. While it seemed like a good idea at the time to make the Dakota slightly bigger than all of it's competitors, which is always has been, ultimately it led to it competing with it's own stable mates.
As far as the Dakota replacement being a V6, if there is a replacement, I'm sure this'll be the case, but it also may be unibody and a much less capable truck. I could see it being more Honda Ridgeline like, but smaller.

Agreed, it's sad but true. I'm pretty sure whatever replaces it will be unibody, whether it's a Dakota or not. Just like the Ford Exploder, and eventually the Ranger.
The Tacoma and Colorado are still going strong though, to add insult to injury.

Just wait, all the new Dakotas will come with V6s like the new F150s
I looked at the Ram but still bought the Dakota. Ram is just too big for my needs. Even at the same price point I am more inclined to go with the Dakota. I was in a Frontier last week. Night and day. It felt like a subcompact. There is definitely a market for something between compact and full size trucks.
