When I lifted my jeep YJ, the old splash guards were all too short to deal with the new configuration. New ones for the engine bay only were about $100, so I decided to see what I could find that I could use to make my own. I went to a local plastic supplier and got a half sheet of 1/8" ABS. This is easy to cut and can be formed with a heat-gun & with a few holes drilled in appropriate spots, they were easy to mount and do the job keeping all the crud off my engine. A similar approach could be used to make a cover to fit right under the dakota's belts, you'd just need to take care to mount it securely to avoid it flying off on the road. Another consideration would be to leave adequate access to oil filter, or have a removable access panel held on with 3 or 4 wing nuts to let you get to the filter.

Not a 4.7L issue, I get the same problem. But for me it only happens with deep water/Speed. Havnt had a problem with mud lol

i have never had that issue with my dak, but have had the intermediate shaft start seizing up last year.
