Regearing question

A shop doesn't need to do it, but if you want to do it yourself, you do need to understand what you're doing and have some special tools to do it with. There should be a few re-gearing videos on the internet if you're interested in seeing the scope of the job. If the whole job for a 4x4 was $1600, that's a good price depending on the quality of the gears & associated parts.

This video may be from the 70s, but it still applies. Hooray for innovations in differential technology.

I purchased the JMR lift, and plan on regearing from 3.55 to 4.56 as soon as funds allow.
It really depends on the size of tires you plan on running. Me, I'm going to run 315/75/16 (which is about 34.8-35"). I would strongly recommend 4.56's with 35" tires. You could get away with 4.10 gears if you're going to run 33" tires, but I personally would still just go right for 4.56's.

And as far as doing the regear, If you're fairly mechanically inclined, and have the patients to really take time and research on how to regear, then by all mean save the money and DIY. Also, plan on having you're vehicle out of commission for a few days while you are working on it. It's by no means a job you can get done in a afternoon or two.
But, for some. Having a shop do it, is peace of mind and most likely much faster then doing it you're self.

The shop that installed my Auburn had it done in a day, they ended up throwing a whole re-build kit at it, took forever for them to get GR warranty approval for the rebuild though, but if I had paid straight out of pocket they would have had it done in time for the next morning. I am happy with the work they did, no complaints what so ever. There is a certain peace of mind having their 6mo install warranty too.
Since I goofed by not putting in gears at the same time, I will probably be trying the next install on my own.
