Default Replacement key?

I just bought a used 2010 Dakota with only one key (with remote head). I need a spare key. What is the best way to get one? Can I buy a blank and program it or have it programmed?

I will move this to the 3rd Generation Dakota sub-forum.

I'm pretty sure that you have to get a blank from the stealership and have them program it. You need 2 good keys to program a blank one

Can't you bring them one of the ebay keys though instead of paying the $150 for one of theirs or do you have to purchase their key?

I tried that, the dealerships around here wouldn't cut and program a blank key that they didn't supply. I still have 2 blank uncut keys if anyone needs them - cheap.

If you have two keys now, you can get those blank keys cut at a locksmith and program them yourself. That way you won't have to go to a dealer in the future. It cost me 8 bucks to cut two keys.

I paid $25 for 2 Blanks (Not Fobs) I got them cut free, and Programmed them myself.

You dont need 2 "Factory" Keys, You just need 2 Cut, Programmed keys.

I programmed my 4th Key with 1 Factory key and my 3rd Key just to see if it would work, and it did.

I was hoping to do that, but unfortunately I can't find a locksmith that will do the cutting. They have various lame excuses, but essentially there doesn't appear to be enough cash in it for them & some have agreements with the automotive locksmiths not to cross into each others territory. I'll try to get them cut next time I go to Buffalo, south of the border, they don't seem to expect your "first born" for each service.
