Question Topper same on 2002 and 3rd gen?

i'm trying to find a topper for my 2002 quad cab dakota...i came across a nice one yesterday...but it sits on a 3rd gen quad cab (2006)...can anyone tell me if the topper would fit on my dakota? on the bed and what about the cab? as in, does it have the same body line? i've read something about the degree of the cab is different...mine is 4 degrees...2005 (assuming same as 2006) is 6 degrees.....just not sure what the difference would be if you were standing at the side looking at it...1/4"...1/2"...1"...?....

thanks
chris

They are probably not the same. The beds are different between the 2 gen and 3 gen

According to the Dodge Truck Builders Guide, (sticky at the top of the forum), there is a difference in the bed size between the two generations.

...................Overall length ......... Cargo
....................of bed box ..............width
2nd Gen ........... 67.9" ................ 59.3"
3rd Gen .............68.6" ................ 59.6"

That being said, some members have put a 2nd Gen topper on a 3rd Gen Dakota. It wasn't a perfect fit, but it worked.

it will fit, I have one from a second gen. it just hangs over a little bit at the back end. like an inch on either side since the top rail on the third gen is tapered on the outside edge. the inside edge of the top rail is square so it fits fine there.

oops, just saw your a second gen asking if a third gen top would fit. I answered it the other way around. But this is what a 2nd gen topper looks like on a 3rd gen. See how the top rail tapers from front to back on the outside edge causing the top to hang over at the back. So reverse engineering this pic, a third gen topper would taper. I think up against the cab would be fine as it appears top be the same (2nd pic).

It works fine for the occasional trip to the river when I use the bed of the truck for sleeping.
