Default Derale Fail

On the way to the car show my heat spiked about 1/4 of the way from the top. I thought it may have been my new rad, but turned out the efan controller melted the fuse without it blowing and I think the controller is fried. I hard wired my fan and my truck stays about 1/8 of the way from the middle. Not sure what to use next, I know alot of people here use the Spal controller, what are your experiences with different controllers? I still have the temp sensor so not sure what to buy at this point.

Also were does you temp needle stay? I think I may get an actual temp guage from pepboys today so I can see where I am at.

Spal here. Gauge stays usually a needle width below 1/2. Also running a 180 t-stat. Thing I don't like is the fan runs all the time. I've gone through the setup several times and the LED's indicate correctly. Just is always on, hot or cold.

With mine hardwired I am about 1/8 below half and thats probably from my rad and 180 tstat. Maybe I'll just keep it hard wired for now until I find a better solution. No sense in paying 100 bux for the same thing a relay can do.

Does your fan run all the time as well?

There aren't very many choices that are robust enough to last in an engine bay environment and are available at reasonable cost. Depending on what fan you have (I read your other thread some time back & can't recall whether you're using the HHR or Taurus), the options can be pretty dismal. If you want an automatic, speed regulated, temperature sensor & air conditioning controlled fan controller that's off-the-shelf and easy to install, the only one I see that's good for both fans is supplied by Painless - these are close to $300. Spal PWM controllers are no longer built although you can find a few new ones still available on the internet - the last time I looked, Speedway had some on their site (in their "garage sale section) for around $130, but these are only good for less than 30 amps, so would only work for the HHR and marginally on the Taurus in Low Speed. If you want to use relays, you can either build your own or buy a setup for 1 or 2 speeds. You need to be careful with some of the cheap systems, the ones I looked at were all marginal and quite a few that came with harnesses, were "under wired" and would overheat with continuous high amp use. I didn't like the Derale when I looked at an installation that used their product, so I'm not surprised that yours failed.

Post what you'd like and maybe I can be of some help with advise.

Ya, I gotta admit I was pretty upset with the kit when I received it. The hot is directly connected to the fan the the ground is switched with the relay.

I just connected a toggle switch to it so atleast it will stay cool, but I am considering using the 40/60 amp relay from the Derale kit to atleast have it ACC controlled.

I do like the idea of a second AC fan, so a dual controller would be nice.

My fan seems to be much louder and blow harder directly connected. I think I may have been overloading it from the beginning. My fan is a generic 15in auto fan. But I am considering upgrading as well, it was pretty scary watching that needle climb....
