Manual Trans Help (I broke it)
The synchronizer for 2nd in my Truck went out last week due to a few too many burn outs over the past 23k miles that I have owned it. I can not shift into 2nd over 3k RPMs or 15 MPH with out it grinding gears really bad. My question is, is there anyway to get the transmission rebuild stronger to handle more power? Also sense the transmission has to come out anyways I was going to replace the clutch and was wondering if they make a stranger one. I have looked around looking for a clutch but all I have found are OEM replacements.
Oh, you can shift without synchro at any speed. Ask any "old school" trucker! I didn't get my car license until I was 18 (motorcycle before). Got it on a Friday and started driving a 5-ton International truck on the Monday.
Square cut gears and no synchro! It is all speed matching my friend lol! I don't tend to use the clutch on modern cars except for starting and stopping! Upshift with ease, downshift with some heel/toe (brake with the left side of your foot and blip the throttle with the right side) and drop it into gear!
I drove a Peugeot 807 with a 2.2 litre turbo-diesel and a 6-speed manual when I was in Spain two weeks ago. I did have to use the clutch in the mountains or I would lose too much momentum in the shifts.
I don't know what is available to make your tranny stronger though.

Syncro's do not go out by an increase in power, or burnouts. They go out when the shifting between gears gets aggressive. They don't do anything to "hold" power, thats what the gear sets do. I bought my truck brand new and have 118K on my 6-speed. I have zero issues shifting with 33" load range E tires, intake, exhaust, e-fan, off-roading, pulling my trailer and race car, etc. I'm still on my original clutch as well.
The way to get better "shift-a-bility" is to get double synro's in the gears you would use most when driving aggressive. My race tranny has 1st-2nd double syncro's. The rest are single.

That ol trucker shifting is hard to master. I did it a few times successfully, but grinded enough times to give it up..... but yeah, if you abuse it - it will fail. fix it and try to be a little easier on it.
