Default No 2 or 4 wheel drive seems to be in neutral

Hi,
Borrowed a friends 2005 Dakota. Backed it up my driveway parked it two hours later tried to drive away and all I had was neutral. In scanning around I saw some talk about a "motor" that shifts between 4 and 2 and it might be burned out.
Anyone have some more details, best guess, part numbers and name. Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks

What do you mean, "all I had was neutral"? Does your shift lever not move, truck just rev, check engine light? etc.

The shifter can be moved to any position forward or reverse and the car does not move or have any feel of going into gear, slight grinding when put into park.May not have be idleing when putting in park.

4x4? did someone put the little **** under the dash center council area into neutral?

Bottom right hand ****, you can put the trans into Neutral here, but I do not recall how you do it from here.

Default Neutral

I am familiar with the rotary switch functions, no change any positions. I may have forgotten to mention the "N" neutral light is now always on and earlier in the day of the failure I got "w4d needs servicing" light on dash.
Thanks

Sounds like the transfer case servo has failed, might be a fuse, might be a relay.

I would check all the fuses, and check into what relays do what. Might be something as simple as a simple corroded wire on on a sensor.

If the "N" light is on, then you are stuck in neutral.

How to get it back into gear is beyond me.

You stick a pen into the little hole where the "N' is..I don't think its a light. Almost like adjusting the clock on older cars, just use the tip of a pen
