Default Ignition key will not turn

My wife has a Dodge Dakota 2006 4door 8cylinder. When she puts the key in to start the truck it does absolutely nothing. Does not turn, it will pull in and out but no turn to start. She taps it a couple of times and it turns and starts like normal. I am wondering if I need a new ignition will we have a ton of keys. 1 to start another to open the door and how will it affect my aftermarket remote start.
Please advise Obiejuankinobie

Even if you have to replace the whole key section in the steering column, I don't forsee it causing an issue with your remote start (as long as it was wired in properly). What brand of remote start system is it, factory or otherwise?

Jason, its an aftermarket Viper. When we had it installed the installer said he needed a spare. The spare key stays under the dash in the remote start module. Very unheard of but thats how it need to be installed.
She nows exactly how to tap the switch to drop the tumblers in. When I get in there I don't have the touch. I'm afraid if I go have a new switch installed I'll have to leave a kidney for payment. Then have to worry I may get extra keys to open doors and start truck.

My Tbird started doing this once and I did have to replace the ignition. It did not affect my aftermarket alarm.

I don't think he installed it properly. Who did the job?

My wife had a 2006 Durango that had almost identical keys to ours, and Best Buy (I knew the installers, used to work there selling computers) installed it without needing a spare anywhere. May need an extra bypass module or some other accessory, but its possible.
