Default Shortening the shifter

Hi guys, I have a 2008 with an AT, and the shifter **** is about 3 inches longer than it needs to be. I seem to manage to hit it hard enough to knock it into neutral about once a week, and last week I dumped an entire cup of Baja Mountain Dew in my console because of that damn shifter.

So, how does the shifter come apart? Does the **** with the tow/haul button just unscrew? Are the wires connected on the button end or inside the column? My basic plan [prior to knowing how it comes apart] is to remove the ****, shorten the stalk, and re-attach the ****. I am not opposed to re-locating the tow switch if it would make things easier...
