Default Questions about tires/wheels

I'd like to say that I have been visiting this forum for a few weeks now without having an account. Finally got around to making account and this will be my first post...already having questions

I have an 05 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 SLT that is almost completely stock. The only mods on my truck are the aftermarket headlights and the flowmaster exhaust system. I am looking to upgrade my rims and tires, yet I am not really sure what I am looking for. I am not the most mechanically inclined so I am looking for a little information before I go searching around for anything to buy.

As of right now I have P265/70R16 tires on my truck. I really like the look of the 20" rims, but I am not sure if I could even fit a big enough tire to use with the 20" rims without the tires rubbing. What I am asking is what kind of tire am I looking for that I can use with 20" rims? Do I need to get more information about the rims? Or is my current tire already big enough? I am not really worried about MPG or anything, strictly for looks. I don't go off-road with my truck or anything either. Please excuse my ignorance. I am nearly clueless when it comes to tire numbers etc.

If it helps at all I was looking at the Liquid Metal Turbine Black rims.

I have attached two pictures of my truck just for fun.

Glad I have finally joined this forum and am looking forward to responses!

First off, welcome to DF. Your truck looks good, and a hell of a cap on there.

For 20" tires, the biggest size that will fit on stock suspension is 265/50/20. I see that the wheels you're choosing are available in 20 x 8.5, with an offset of 18mm. That is a perfect fit for your Dakota, and no trimming will be necessary or rubbing should occur with the 265/50/20 tires. Whatever wheel that you choose, be it 20" or not, the offset is a huge part of a proper fitting wheel, as well as possible tire rub.

Ask away about any questions that you have, this bunch is always ready to help out.

Thanks for the help so far guys!

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good type of 265/50/20 tire? Been reading some decent reviews about the Goodyear Fortera HL edition for about $120 a tire. Also see good reviews about the Hankook RH06.

Also, does the pattern on the rim or the bore matter? The rims I was looking at have two different options. The first option has 5 x 139.7 pattern with 78.1mm bore or the other choice was 5 x 115 pattern with a 71.5mm bore.

Thanks in advanced!

P.S. Forgot to mention that I have been checking on some tires and various sites are telling me that this size will now fit on my Dakota?

Our bolt pattern is 5 x 139.7mm (metric), same as 5 x 5.5" (inches). The 5x115mm will not fit.

You'll need to get the hub size of 78.1mm. Our Generation Dakota hub size is 77.8mm, so the 71.5mm would not fit. Also you may need hub centering rings, some of the guys with aftermarket wheels can give info on that. Some sites will give the rings for free along with purchase.

Read this for info about Hub Centering Rings.

And the Fortera is a pretty good tire, I had them on a previous vehicle and liked them.

I really appreciate all the help so far dakotaff. Given me extremely useful information!!

I was just curious if anyone had 20 inch rims on a 3rd gen Dakota SLT. I have been searching Google images and various websites, but I am not 100% if any of the posted pictures are accurate.

Few more questions for anyone. (Again please excuse my ignorance) Will the new 265/50/20 tires make my ride any higher? From what I have been trying to read the only difference that I can see is that with the new tires and 20 inch rims I would just have more rim showing and less tire. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks again in advanced!

20's right here, I can't wait to put them back on after winter! A few other guys here have 20's too.

100_1820.jpg

265/70/16 has a tire height of 30.6 inches.
265/50/20 has a tire height of 30.43 inches.

You can fit 20's, but you have to be careful with the sidewall height and you will probably need a leveling kit.

I have seen various different answers about this question. So if I am using the 265/50/20 tires with a wheel that is 20 x 8.5 with an 18mm offset on a stock 3rd gen quad cab dakota SLT 4x4 do I have to have the leveling kit for sure? Would love to have a couple different opinions Never hurts.

Thanks guys!
