Default Has anyone here built their own camper top or bed cover?

I've spent a ton of time on craigslist and such hoping to find a good deal on a used camper top. At this point Im thinking of just making my own, for a few reasons.

1. Cost- much much cheaper than new manufactured, and probably less than a used one that might not even match that well anyway

2. Design- Making my own lets me do what I want, re-shape or configure it as I see fit, maybe even construct folding panels that can be incorporated into my existing fiberglass tonneau cover

3. Pride: Just to say "Yeah, I made it myself"

Anyway, who here has done stuff like this, has pics to share, OR if you have been thinking about it just as I have...if so, let's brain storm!

Personally I found used ones cheap. I never spent over $200 on the 2 I bought, and the One that came with the truck I sold for $450.

With a used or new it comes down to time and cost. I think used would be cheaper then making a equivalent one ie Fibreglass, or even Fiberglass coated. Then you also get the Life span of it if it is Fiberglass over Wood.

I found one on craigslist for $150. It came off an 04 but it fit good enough for me for the few times I actually used it.

I have seen several on craigslist near me that were cheap as hell (=<$150)...just in crappy a** condition. So, if I did my own, I'd probably pick something like that up, with the intent of cutting it down, and use existing frame work, rails, etc., into what I wanted.

If I get lucky enough in the next month or so and find what I want, I will regress...

I got quoted $1300 hahah to go from Red to Black. But it was also a Aluminium Contractor one with Rear windows, side doors and such.

I would Think a normal one would be like $300 or so.
