I personally lower my tailgate by hand lol and if a kid got clocked in the head by it he probably will learn not to stand so close when its being opened. But thats just me (tough love)

Don't have the problem of a kid running around yet, my first is due mid February.
Keep in mind that you are not the only one who opens the gate. On more than one occasion my wife was startled as how heavy the thing was. It could hurt your wrist if you don't expect it. Some have suggested to just let it go. I don't think that is a good idea. Puts too much stress on the cables.
Im not married. I am the only one that opens my tail gate. I also have a first gen I'm sure my tailgate is lighter than yours. It really never seemed heavy to me.

Well congratulations. I don't have any kids but my sister has 5. I love them but if they hurt themselves to a non severe degree I usually laugh. they end up laughing about It too.
