Best mod ever...
4.56 gears.... Best mod ever.
I finally had them installed last week. I have a 2011 Dakota, quad cab, 2WD, 4.7, auto. It had the 3.92 stock with the tow package but even with that the gearing just felt too tall. The thing would damn near run up to 75mph before shifting to 3rd.
So the results. Wow!!! Drive-ability is greatly improved. It just feels right driving around town and in stop/go traffic. It seems the transmission is actually shifting at lower RPM's than before. Driving easy it gets into top gear at around 43mph and can hold it pretty well. No more downshifts or hunting lower gears at lower city speeds when climbing a grade. And when you need to go, it GOES! Stabbing the gas at a red light feels like I was just punt kicked through the intersection. It jumps up and goes.
Similar improvements for the highway. Before it was sitting at about 2200 rpms at 70mph. Now it is about 2500 at 70. This will affect fuel economy but I'm rarely on the interstate at those speeds anyway. If I'm on the interstate I'm towing the trailer and this has made a HUGE improvement in how it hauls. This things pulls off a stop with the trailer about as well as it did without it using the old gears. In tow mode it is also holding gears better and no longer downshifting as much (if at all) on grades or trying to maintain speed in a headwind.
Should you get gears? Hell yes..... I think I'll keep this truck a little longer. It's fun to drive again.

Wasn't as bad as you would think (for 2WD guys at least). Was about $550 total with gear, install, fluid, parts, etc...
Found a local shop that does pretty much nothing but gears. They charge $250 plus parts and knocks them out all day long.
