I think the initial swap is easy the computer issues may be a P.I.A. Maybe you could find a recked truck for the parts?

I've seen a couple of threads relating to this type of swap and for the most part, things work. If you can get a donor vehicle that still has the original harness, computer, security system (including ignition switch, keys, etc., so you don't need to reflash the computer) and transmission all from the same engine type that you're planning on using, it should be a simple swapout. I would change the entire engine bay harness along with the computer and associated parts (including the security system components) - you might end up with some peripheral differences in displays and operation when you fire things up using the other computer but I'd expect it to work.

As soon as you install a different ECM that does not have the same VIN # as your truck you will have problems.
There are companies who can reprogram the vin # to match your truck though. Just be sure they JUST CHANGE THE VIN and not reprogram the ECM to your original settings (automatic trans) or your right back to square one. ;>)

I may be wrong, but from the standpoint of the truck working, I believe that as long as you change the harness with ALL the associated modules from one truck, it should work without hiccup. However, you might get some legal hassle if you need to have the PCM scanned for emission testing etc, because the VINs won't match. As I say, I may be wrong (it did work this way on earlier models), but it does seem logical to me

Sounds like way too much trouble to me.

Yes Alfons you are correct. All the VIN coded modules would have to be changed so it would be easier to have the original VIN programed into the new ECM.
VIN coded modules include: ECM, FCM, anti lock brake module, air bag module, overhead module, dash cluster, climate control module and radio.
I may have missed a couple but it gives you some idea how many parts are VIN coded and changing any of them without the correct VIN will cause a VIN mismatch code and screw up the truck.
Some mismatches are not a big deal like the radio but most of the others will stop that module from working.

Thanks for the info EVguy, I didn't realize there were that many that were all encoded with the VIN. I guess if you need one of those modules changed for some reason, that module would need to be flashed in order for it to work.
