Next step - check your filter.

Is this problem more common with some brands of filters? I have used MoPar or Wix filters since I bought my truck, but last time I used Fram because the local parts store no longer carries MoPar or Wix. I never really noticed the lifter noise before, but it seems much louder now.

Yes, it is.

Seems like some brands and models have really good anti drain back valves, some have poor ones, and some have stuff that doesn't work at all for anti-drain back.

And with poor or non-existent anti-drainback, there's no oil held in the galleries to keep the lifter noise down on startup.

That's why I run Wix on my Dakota and Motorcraft on my Ford - and am about to try some Motorcraft on the Dakota.

The base Fram filters seem to have less competent anti-drainback valves than Wix or Motorcraft or Purolator filters have.

Here's an interesting thread on several makes and models of filters cut open for examination: http://forums.tccoa.com/showthread.php?t=145188 Now, it's a Ford forum, so they look at "Motorcraft vs. everyone else". Disregard that, and see what Wix, Purolator, Fram, et al are doing.
