Default Steering rattle

Hello all. First time posting in the forum. I have a 06 Dakota 4.7L 4x4 that I've owned for just over a year now. 142,000km. I'm having an issue with a rattling noise coming from the steering column or beyond. The issue only occurs when going over bumps and when the steering wheel is in the straight position.
If i have and tension on the steering wheel like going around a bend the noise will not occur.
After some research I believe the issue is the intermediate steering shaft. I've inspected it and there is definitely play in the two u-joins in the shaft. So, I'm planning on pulling the trigger next week and buying one. Just wanted to see if anyone here has experienced this issue.

Thanks.

Yep. Common issue for that steering shaft u-joint to go bad.

Just installed mine yesterday.Works great,no more slop or steering rattle from that bad upper u-joint.You're supposed to use new screws but I wire brushed mine real well and chased them with a M10-1.5 thread die and reused them no problem.

I did the upper first, had an assistant hold the steering column still while I seated the upper joint and torqued the bolt and then returned the wheel to center then seated the lower to the steering rack. The screws were torqued to 28 lb-ft.
