When I brought a 2006 Dakota it was spray painted black. At the time I thought it was fine but I would rather have the original silver paint back. Is there any way to remove the black matte paint without damaging the base coat.

Try some Carb cleaner or brake cleaner with a rag, don't over do it thought because you take off the silver paint as well.

 

The entire vehicle is spray painted black? Hope you have lots of time on your hand and are prepared to do some major finish work on the original paint/clearcoat if you do manage to "wipe off" the spray paint.

 

 

a kid tagged my shed a few months ago with black spray paint. i started with wd-40, then brake clean. I found a spray can of paint remover on my shelf and that stuff took it right off, literally no residue left.
