Default Engine ticking noise - help !!!

Hey Guys -

So my 2008 Dakota v8 4x4 just started making a loud ticking noise about a month ago. It happens from startup and doesn't go away. It sounds like a sewing machine. The noise speeds up when i press on the accelerator. Also is more prevalent when driving rather than at idle or in park. If I am driving and let off the gas the ticking seems to get quieter/stop.

I bought it to my local mechanic and he says doesn't sound like lifters and thinks its exhaust - says its coming from the passenger side of the motor but he couldnt pinpoint where or if it was 100% exhaust and didnt seem interested to go down that rabbit hole.

I have been reading something about the timing chain tensioner causing a similar noise but not sure how to check it properly. Or if its something else. Want to make sure its nothing serious.

Thanks for the help!

normally if an exhaust bolt breaks off engine has a loud tick at start up but once warms up goes away, have you noticed any loss in power or check engine light?

Have him check the exhaust manifold thoroughly. I have the same issue on the left side. My left exhaust manifold has a crack, and will get replaced soon enough.

I know your mechanic said it wasn't but sounds like lifters ....

Try using a long driver and place the handle up to your ear and the other end on the valve cover ... have someone rev the engine, listen for the noise.

No check engine light yet - MPG its hard to tell I drive pretty spirited.

I will take another look this weekend and try to figure it out. Keep me posted if anyone has any other tricks/tips in looking for the gremlin.

Like what has already been said. First thing is to check the obvious known issue of broken exhaust manifold bolts.

Yep ,mine had crack in manifold an did that.
Was quiet after changing it but BEWARE removal of those bolts ..easy breakers...Had to drill out 2.
Common with dakotas..

Had the same issue. My ticking was the exhaust manifold Passenger side. Two bolts had broke due to heat causing a leak. Right side seems to be suspect too. : ( Check the manifold before tearing into the lifters.
