Default fix for Dakota shifting into 4wd on its own

This problem has been around for years. Are there any solutions?

Yeah, make sure it's in 2wd and pull the fuse, #42. Now at least it won't engage 4WD.

The issue may be the switch, Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM), or the motor itself.

Default fix for 4 we shifting on its own

So after going through years of users questions and answers to this problem, I decided I would do the old Easter egg hunt . I bought a new Dorman shifter motor and installed it. it has only been a couple of days so I cannot say it defiantly fixed the problem, but so far so good. I wanted to say that I DID NOT have to remove the front drive shaft to install it. This truck is a 2008 Dakota Laramie, 4.7 V8 automatic. The middle bolt that attaches the motor to the Xfer case is directly behind the drive line, the upper and lower can be reached by a socket and ratchet. That middle bolt I took out by making 827 quarter turns of a boxed end wrench, I lost my boxed end ratchet . Ill try to keep all informed. Thanks for everyone's help.

Dropping the driveshaft just makes life easier.Nothing to get in the way and by this time most of them could use a rebuild anyway. At least the ones that I've done.Bear in mind the position sensor is inside the motor housing and is known to fail and when it does it causes the shift motor to keep cycling. The electrical connector to the motor is known to melt or warp some making it difficult to release or reinstall.Check the terminals for corrosion if you live in the rust belt.I like to use dielectric grease when reconnecting it.Corroded terminals at the tccm is a known issue as well.

Well day 3 and the 4wd is behaving as it should, with the new shift motor.

OK, were coming up on a week now for the new shift motor and looks like that was the problem.
