Default SVC 4WD.....bad case motor or computer issue?

Before i go back to the shop for a 3rd transfer case motor, need an opinon.

ive got an 05 dakota with 210k on it. Hoping to dump it and upgrade to a new Ram. Issue is 4wd is acting up again and id like to resolve that for the 3rd time before i sell it to get a little more money out of it. I dont wanna $800+ if its not worth it. I had the transfer case motor replaced at 120k in Nov of 2016. In Oct of 2019, with 188k on it, it had to be replaced again. So here im am, summer of 2020 with 210k on the truck and driving at highway speed (55mph), the truck SVC4wd light comes on and will engage iteself all on its own.

To solve that temporaily, ive dis-engaged the 4wd by pulling the fuse out from under the hood (#42 i believe) and forcing it into lock out.

My question is, when this happened in the past, and i pulled the fuse, the light stayed alluminated on the dash. It does not now. Sometimes its off when i head out for work in the morning, drive 10 miles down the road, and it comes on for 5 minutes, then goes back off. Other times it goes on when i start it, and stays on for 20 of my 35 miles to work. This is why im wondering if its a computer/wiring glitch, and not the actual transfer case motor this time around.

any help/ideas would be appreciated before i spend anymore $$ on this beast then i have too.

thanks!

you are talking about the transfer case shift motor that you had replaced correct? if so, that is crazy that you would be on your 3rd motor in 4 years. maybe something with the wiring or wiring harness could be the issue. i replaced mine at 130k earlier this year and its been fine since.

your switch also runs on the a/c wiring harness, most of the time the switch harness will rub on the frt driveshaft and beak into the wiring , check to see if the wiring is chafed at all..something is sending mixed signal to your transfer case motor.

Thanks superdak05! I figure it was probaly a wiring issue somewhere. Even known they said all my wiring/cable connections/harnesses were good back in Sept/Oct of 18, i was betting on that being my issue. Hope your correct. Save me a good amount of dough (i hope).
