Exclamation Any information on the Neutral Safety Switch on a 2006 Dodge Dakota 4.7 Automatic?

The vehicle isn't starting, the ignition switch, starter, battery, and relays have been replaced. I noticed however that the reverse lights don't come on when ignition is in the on position and the gear is shifted to reverse. Also the gear selector indicator on the dash doesn't illuminate for some reason and I read that the NSS could be the problem. It doesn't start in neutral though but I think it's worth looking into. Any info about where it's located would help because it looks like each year of this model changes drastically. Thank you.

Shift cable could be out of adjustment. Shift it until you get reverse lights, then go one more click down. Failing that, get the manual and check the switch.

I don’t have the manual unfortunately. I looked at the pic of the NSS and when I looked at the tranny, I see nothing that looks like it, Can’t find any diagrams of it either.

There's a link in the stickies on the front page of the forum for the factory service manual (FSM) for the 2005, which is basically the same as the 2006. Or, here (https://dodgeforum.com/forum/3rd-gen...nd-more-2.html)

I believe for the 545RFE auto trans mated to the 4.7L, you should be referring to the Transmission Range Sensor:

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION 545RFE - SERVICE INFORMATION

SENSOR-TRANSMISSION RANGE

DESCRIPTION

The Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) is part of the solenoid module, which is mounted to the top of the valve body inside the transmission.

The Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) has five switch contact pins that:

- Determine shift lever position
- Supply ground to the Starter Relay in Park and Neutral only.
- Supply +12 V to the backup lamps in Reverse only.
The TRS also has an integrated temperature sensor (thermistor) that communicates transmission temperature to the TCM and PCM.

OPERATION

The Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) communicates shift lever position to the TCM as a combination of open and closed switches. Each shift lever position has an assigned combination of switch states (open/closed) that the TCM receives from four sense circuits. The TCM interprets this information and determines the appropriate transmission gear position and shift schedule.

There are many possible combinations of open and closed switches (codes). Seven of these possible codes are related to gear position and five are recognized as “between gear” codes. This results in many codes which should never occur. These are called “invalid” codes. An invalid code will result in a DTC, and the TCM will then determine the shift lever position based on pressure switch data. This allows reasonably normal transmission operation with a TRS failure.
Regarding adjustment of the Gearshift Cable:

ADJUSTMENTS - GEARSHIFT CABLE

Check adjustment by starting the engine in PARK and NEUTRAL. Adjustment is CORRECT if the engine starts only in these positions. Adjustment is INCORRECT if the engine starts in one but not both positions. If the engine starts in any position other than PARK or NEUTRAL, or if the engine will not start at all, the transmission range sensor may be faulty.
The 2005 service manual (link above) also has a cable adjustment procedure and a diagram.
