Default 2005 Dakota suddenly gutless, then fine again

Yesterday while driving home, going up a big hill, suddenly my 2005 Dakota SLT quad cab V8 automatic had no torque. I put the pedal to the metal, but we just crawled along. Pretty quick the engine light came on.

Instead of going home I drove around a bit. I pulled over, shut ignition off, waited a minute and then fired her up again. Then she was back to her old peppy self.

Today the check engine light is still on, but otherwise things are normal.

What the heck was that all about? Now I'm nervous to go very far from home.

Really not looking forward to someone telling me I need a new tranny.

You'll need to connect an OBDII scanner and read the error codes.

Thanks for the tip. I've ordered an OBDII scanner and will report back next week.

I had a friend that had that happen in a toyota 4runner, turned out to be a TPS, that was bad. so it was always getting a signal that the throttle was barely open no matter how hard the pedal was pushed
