has anyone attempted to replace the above with the A/C still in place? From the looks of it it might be possible.

On my 2005 V6, I've removed the A/C clutch while the compressor was still in place. If yours is a V8, not sure if you would have the room. Here's mine with the clutch removed:
To get a set of snap ring pliers in there I did unbolt the compressor so I could use the play in the lines to give me some extra clearance. This was on a 4.7 btw.
