Transmission Questions
I have a 2006 Dodge Dakota Laramie Crew Cab, or at least that is what i think they call the one with the 4 regular sized doors.
Anyway over this past weekend was on the interstate going home, all of a sudden the rpms kicked up, the transmission overtemp light came on, and the speed started to go down. Pulled off to the side of the road went thru the various gears, I have nothing but reverse
So I can only assume the transmission is now no good
So a guy has a 4x4 laramie dakota transmission and it is from a V8, mine is also 4x4 and V8 but the difference is mine is 2006 his is 2003
Would a this 2003 fit the 2006?
Or what years are interchangable?

I recall there being an issue with using the previous generation transmissions, but I don't remember exactly what the issue was. Any 3rd gen (2005-2011) v8 transmission (545rfe) will work and it doesn't even need 4x4. The output shaft extension gets swapped for the transfer case. I have done this on my 4x4 truck as my donor was 4x2. The oil pan and filter are different between 4x4 and 4x2.
Also keep in mind that the front driveshaft to transfercase mounting from 2007-2011 is different. So if you do find a whole assembly from a newer truck grab the drivshaft as well, or swap the transfer case.
A handy tool is rockauto. When you select a part category you can click on the part number next to the manufacturer name in the top left corner. This will bring up a little window that shows which vehicles and years that part is compatible with. I use it all the time to cross reference compatible years of vehicles.

The biggest concern with using earlier 545fre transmissions is making sure the tcms and plugs match up. I don't remember when the conversion happened from PCM to TCM. An there was a TCM update.
Also you need to run a full diagnostic, if it grenaded, you wouldn't have reverse. An if you lose forwards, mechanical failure still leaves some gears as functional. So you're looking at something else happening. Whether it be sensor failure, pump failure, etc. The transmission could've overheated but it's not a sudden thing.
It literally could just be a sensor failed and tripped limp mode.
