Folks I need help! I have a 2007 Dakota that was purchased as a non runner from auction - so I have no vehicle history. I would turn over, but not start. I thought it might be a bad key, so I had a lock smith in to program new keys. He found the existing key did not have a transponder and the new keys could not be programmed to the truck. This led me to trying SKIM delete process. The programmer that was going to delete the SKIM found that the PCM was not for my truck when he received it. I purchased a replacement PCM from him that was programed with my vin and mileage information. We tried it without the SKIM module and the truck would not even turn over. Once the SKIM was installed the truck will turn over but still does not start correctly. The fuel pressure shows 60# of pressure when I turn the key. If I crank and crank on it, it will occasionally start and run, but not really well. I also get a very strong smell under the hood. I pulled the Rear OS2 sensor, but think I might have plugged CATS. Any suggestions before I perform a ritual burning at the stake?!!?

I would also add that with the rear O2 sensor removed and when the truck start, it doesn't sound like it has open exhaust. I have pulled O2 sensors before and the engines sound much louder than this one does. If I can rev the engine, only then does it sound like exhaust is coming out the O2 sensor hole. Not sure if it helps with diagnosis...

 

Computer setting any codes? What does it smell like?? Gas? Something burning? Will it start with ether??

 

As weird as it may sound, try a new battery. I bought a 2008 4.7 from a junkyard and it would have trouble starting. Sometimes it wouldn't turn over, or it would just crank forever. Dropped a new battery in it and it drove out of the garage.

 

Does not smell like gas. No codes that I can find in the computer. When it start it almost smells like it is hot, but it has not been running long enough to be hot. Strange burnt smell. Have not tried ether. If I keep cranking on it, it will start and run for about 20-45 seconds then shut down.
