Default Ride height between 2nd gen. and 3rd gen.

Last night I parked beside a 2nd gen dakota 4x4 and I have the new TRX4 Dakota. So I got out my measuring tape (it was night) and under lights from the parking lot started to measure...the 2nd gen had 2 inches more lift, the body from the side to ground was 2 inches higher than my 3rd gen. And wheel wells had the same 2 inches difference. However from looking at them together side by side and measuring their height I noticed that my 3rd gen was actually taller overall by 1 inch than the 2nd gen. And the top of the bed height was even one inch taller.
So in conclusion since mine has an extra 1 inch ride height from factory from the TRX4 package...a regular 3rd gen 4x4 with 16" wheels would be exactly the same height as the 2nd gen. 4x4. Even though the 2nd gen rides higher they are the same height to top of truck. Both trucks had 16" rims and same size tires. Food for thought...

Very nice truck!!!

Do you know how they get the extra 1" height?

I am thinking about a 2" on the front and 1" in back on mine.

Thanks,
LB

Well I believe its the after market shocks...they are definately not stock and probally the springs are different too. I believe they are. I might lift mine in the front...not sure yet. I did put my K&N filter in my H.O. and it was a huge difference overthe paper stock one.

One question & one comment...

Question: Where did the thought of the "extra 1 inch" ride height come from??? (it's not advertised thru Dodge WHATSOEVER)

TRX Package includes (from Dodge website):
16" x 8.0" TRX/TRX4 Cast Aluminum Wheels
3.92 Axle Ratio
4-Wheel Anti-Lock Brakes
750-Ampere Maintenance-Free Battery
Anti-Spin Differential Rear Axle
Auxiliary In-Tank Transmission Oil Cooler
Delete Rear Stabilizer Bar
Front and Rear Rubber Floor Mats
Fuel Tank Skid Plate Shield
Heavy Duty Engine Cooling
Heavy Duty Service Group
LT265/70R16 OWL All Terrain Tires
Power Steering Cooler
Rear Extra Heavy Duty Shock Absorbers
Skid Plate Group
Transfer Case/Front Suspension Skid Plate
Tow Hooks
"TRX4 Off-Road" badge

Comment: The new generation ('05-06) of Dakotas have the same ride height for 4x2 & 4x4....so of course the older/previous generation of Dakotas are gonna sit higher....I've had a 1999 Dakota 3.9 2wd, a 2001 5.9 R/T, a 2002 4.7 2wd, & a 2004 4.7 4x4 and there's no doubt (visibly) that the 4x4 sat waaaaaay higher on the previous generation of Dakotas.

Not the same anymore for the new ones though.

Dodge does advertise it...you know the website for THE product will be last to add it...so here it is for you.

Option packages for 2006 include TRX, TRX4 Off-Road, R/T, and Night Runner. Each is available in the Club Cab or Quad Cab configuration.

TRX includes unique five-spoke/five-lug 16-inch aluminum wheels and Goodyear Wrangler off-road tires; tow hooks; a limited-slip differential; and TRX decal on the cargo box. The TRX package is available on 2WD ST, SLT and Laramie. TRX4 Off-Road includes everything in the TRX package plus painted shocks; an increased ride height of one inch; heavy-duty service package; skid plates; TRX4 Off-Road cargo box decal; and slush mats.

It's from this web site....http://www.newcars.com/model/Dodge_D...id=65&show=all

There are more web sites with the info. But most of all I have a printed booklet for Dakota's they give away a dealerships and it says it in there.
Pick up one at your local Dodge dealer!

Right...I remember reading it places, but it just wasn't on the Dodge website....oh well

I believe you & it's cool and all, but it's JUST "1 inch".....that's all
That's very very minimal

Even with the extra ride height of your TRX package, I think the old generation of Dakota 4x4's LOOK like they sit higher.

My old '04 QC 4x4 when I first got it:

Yes the second gen 4x4 sat 2 inches higher than 3rd gen. I had a 4x4 Dakota 1999 5.2 and it sat higher than my new one...oh well...I did like the old ride height. But the new one rides so smooth.
